You didn’t need us to tell you that there are stock issues! The demand for this game is PHENOMENAL – it had better be good eh? There are hundreds of people searching for this game on our site every minute and the majority of you have been lucky. However for some of you it seems just as you thought you had got one after being sent a confirmation email, you receive a ‘cancellation’ email shortly after telling you there isn’t enough stock available! How I-R-R-I-T-A-T-I-N-G. You would think if a merchant didn’t have stock in then they wouldn’t advertise that they did, right? I think it’s a case of hundreds of people ordering in the same period of time and the merchant’s system just not being fast enough in checking the stock levels. It’s only afterwards when the computer goes to match an order up with an item that the figures don’t match up and they realize there isn’t enough stock! Then some of you get those annoying and disappointing emails… So how can we help you avoid that? Well, what we do is tell you exactly what the merchant tells us. Their server tells our server that stock is available and that’s how we bring the information to you. If their server says stock is available, then the product page will say that – which it has done. When you click-through – there is stock! Our technology is very accurate and reliable in doing this. What we can’t tell you is if they have stock available when they are telling us they do, but they don’t really! I think it may become a case of not who has the stock in (because we can tell you right up to the minute who says they do) but a case of who is the most reliable to buy from. We’ll keep you updated as best we can, but we also rely on what you tell us too. Leave a message of your experience here for us and others to see. We will try and help you by reporting what we find out to you and also what others tell us. So, as of Dec 2nd 21:51 – this is the deal… - Woolworths - Unfortunately in administration. - Zavvi – No longer taking orders of any games or consoles. Stock issues to do with their supplier. - Play – Have been informed (Dec 2) they cannot guarantee delivery in time for Christmas. - Currys, PCWorld and Dixons (all part of the same group) – Some of you have received cancellation emails from these merchants, whilst orders for others have gone through. Be aware a cancellation could happen after you place an order. - PowerplayDirect - We spoke directly to their Head Office and although you can place an order on their site – they have NO stock currently. They are awaiting stock but have no idea when they will receive any. - HMV - you can Add to Basket and pay for an order but they clearly state ‘Currently Out Of Stock’. Other than all the other retailers are awaiting stock and of course we will be the first to inform you when stock arrives. Make sure you sign up to our email alerts on the Professor Layton Stock Locator page. UPDATE 15th Dec: I spoke with Play.com on the 5th who confirmed what I said above. Their system is not fast enough in reading stock levels and unfortunately there are those orders which cannot be allocated an item and have to be refunded. Once stock comes in, everyone orders at once (easily over a hundred people a minute) and the sytem can’t keep up. However they do keep getting batches of stock in, although they don’t know exactly when it comes in. All you can do is try your luck. If you do order and it does go through – you are one of the lucky ones! If it doesn’t, I know it’s disappointing but at least you know the reason why. They also assured me that ALOT of orders have gone through, so if yours was successful why don’t you post below and let us know? I myself, placed an order with Play over a week ago and it is still awaiting stock, so unless something happens by Thursday I think it is safe to assume orders won’t be despatched in time for Christmas for those with that status. Has anyone received their game from Play, Currys, Dixons, Littlewoods or PC World in the last week? Let us all know.

  2. Currys – ordered, got a reservation number. Drove 10 miles to pick up – took my money – couldn’t find it – refunded me – found it and took my money – ten minutes later got a phone call to say they had made a mistake as they had no stock so don’t bother coming to the store!!
    It beats me!


  3. Littlewoods & Zavvi: Have tried to order through both ,both said was in stock zavvi mailed the next day to say hey didnt have any littlewoods even gave me a delivery date ,2 days after the delivery date came and went they phoned to say hadnt got any !!!

  5. Littlewoods: I ordered it and they gave me a delivery date. I didn’t trust them so I phoned them twice to ask them if they were sure they had them in stock and both times they said yes and that I would recieve the game within a couple of days. I just got a call yesterday saying that they could not guarantee delivery before christmas.

    I have plenty to say as I am seething! I think it is outrageous to advertise something as In Stock if it clearly isn’t – and Play came into stock yesterday too after sending out Cancellation Emails the day before. Either they have stock or they don’t!

  9. I ordered through Zavvi last week, payment was taken, order status was listed as despatched the following day, to then get an email 8 days later to say my order had been cancelled! I am still awaiting credit to my card!


  10. Was not impressed with my Curry’s sale. The sales guys had no idea as to whether my order was in or not. If I had taken the first guy’s advice on my refund and left the store (after a 20 mile round trip), I would not have the product. It was only because I said ” Look there, look there, no – in that box etc etc” and refused to leave the store that they found it. It was blamed on the night staff, the computer booking system and anything else to hand. But to get a phone call when I had left the store to say it was not in stock after all and not to come in was the icing on the cake!
    Lost me as a future customer, that’s for sure.


  11. PC World – same old story – paid by credit card, confirmation of order, then cancellation email the next day. Surely DSG’s stock control system is sophisticated enough for this not to happen. Let’s hope their credit card refund system functions more efficiently!


  12. Ordered over a week ago, website stated it was in stock at £29.99, we called the orderline and checked. Were informed that yes it was in stock and advised that it would be delivered by the following Wednesday. Called on the Thursday and was advised that it hadn’t been picked yet, to leave it 5 working days.
    Today were informed that they were out of stock – only found this out as we were fed up of waiting and wanted information. Were advised to cancel our order as they wouldn’t be getting any more in and to go trawl the shops.
    Again why advertise that you have something in stock if you don’t have it…… isn’t that false advertising – should I be contacting Trading Standards I wonder????

  13. I was one of the lucky ones. I ordered last Friday and I received my copy on Wednesday. I can’t fault Play at all.
    A friend of mine received her copy from Littlewoods last Thursday. Keep trying and hopefully you’ll get one! x

Everytime stock comes into PLAY.com I place an order – I then get an email saying “This email is only an acknowledgement of receipt of your order which has been passed to our dispatch department to be processed. Thank you for ordering with etc”. This has been going on since end of November. Only once have I got an email saying ’sorry, out of stock’. Every other order is ignored. When I check my account details on play.com the message changes almost daily from ‘on order’ to ‘ awaiting stock’. But yet they keep getting stock in so why is my order (orders) not being fulfilled? As soon as I get a positive confirmation I’ll cancel the other orders to free up stock. Frustrating though!

  16. I ordered through Play on Tuesday afternoon (2nd) and have a status of “awaiting stock” – hasn’t been cancelled by them at all. Play have had it in stock several times since. I can quite understand that their system can’t keep up given the popularity of the game but why don’t they fulfil back orders that haven’t been cancelled rather than advertise it as being in stock? It has been listed as available on at least 5 ocassions since I ordered my game. It’s just a little disappointing coming from a retailer like Play.


  17. @Karen: I completely agree with you. Why cancel orders in the first place? It makes sense to fulfill them as stock comes in. Asides from being a fair way to do things, it would also benefit Play’s image with it’s customers, and in the current climate I don’t think any retailer wants to be losing customers do they? Such a simple solution.


  18. I am in the same boat as Karen, its really annoying ordering something, seeing it as awaiting stock and then seeing it available from there website. It would be so handy for someone to get in contact with Play and actually find out why they are doing that? Because its sure not giving customers faith in Play.
    I would hope that back orders would be completed first and then offer what you haven’t sold, it seems very underhand offering stock you just don’t have.

  20. Now gone up to £99.99 plus postage for delivery by the 24th Dec. Lots of irate potential customers complaining about Amazon allowing these “Dick Turpin” characters to operate on their site. Thought he was dead – apparently not!!


  21. Rumour has it that because Entertainment UK Ltd. [the distributor of many Games, CDs etc.] has gone into administration along with Woolworths PLC. that stock is being held in the warehouses, and cannot be moved because of the finical and legal situations affected by these companies. Professor Layton was available everywhere on release. I even held it in my hands, but though I’d wait for my partner to buy me it for Christmas [big mistake!]. So even though it is a popular game, stock is really hard to fall upon because of the above. Hope this helps someone :)

  23. Ordered on 02 Dec from Play.com and received my order acknowledgement. The status of my order has switched from ‘awaiting stock’ to ‘order placed’ and back again several times. Rang them this morning to see what the score is and was told by a Jamie Hughes who is a manager there that there is no stock and they haven’t had any since the end of November. He said everyone who had placed orders would be receiving an email saying they wouldn’t get their game before Xmas and that the reason their web site keeps putting the game in stock is a ‘web error’. They even tried to tell me I’d got it wrong and that only Playtrade had the game keep coming into stock but I’ve been ordering from Play for long enough to know the difference! I feel very fobbed off and will think twice before ordering with Play in the future.

  25. I ordered from Play on the 1st Dec, but by the 2nd my account said “Awaiting Stock”. I gave them until yesterday and it still said “Awaiting Stock” so I cancelled my order with them and have ordered from Game instead – my order with them reads that it is being picked and packed (fingers crossed!)


  26. @Doug: It’s amazing isn’t it? I would want the game cartridge to be gold-plated for that amount of money! I wonder if anyone actually buys it at that price? £50, £60 or even £100 is one thing, but £200? The company selling it just looks like a greedy pig.

    This game will come into stock after Christmas at the regular price so don’t fret if you can’t get it now, promise the little ones they have an extra Christmas present coming after Christmas… they won’t be disappointed, it’s actually something to look forward to.

    Not only gold plated but hand delivered as well! Must be a practical joker working for them – surely they can’t be serious? No-one cannot be that desperate? Wise words from yourself – it will wait. I am lucky as I got one, even though Curry’s did their best to screw up my efforts. Luckily for them, I don’t have a long memory. Good luck to those looking – but avoid Amazon.

  28. I placed an order for PL&TCV and duly paid for my order. Dixons took the order and payment saying they had stock. 24 hours later they emailed me to say they did not have stock and could not fulfil the order. Although this is disappointing I can understand that demand is high. But they then told me it will take 7-10 days to refund the payment they took from me within hours. Is it not possible to take payment when the order is actually being fulfilled? Now I will receive a credit card bill for something that I do not have and will have to pay that or pay interest. I AM NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL and have told them so.

  30. No stock anywhere is Ipswich or Suffolk from what i can tell, had it ordered at currys, money taken then email next day with cancellation details. Very dissapointing, and the stupid prices quoted by some sites only adds to the frustration. Just put *Sory, out of stock* not a price triple what it us worth. Disgracefull management by respected websites at times like these. Hope some of you track them down. Merry Christmas

Been trying for 2 weeks now looks like an IOU will be wrapped up and placed under the tree instead. Won’t be shopping at Curry’s again and you would think that they need to keep customer loyalty especially in the current climate.


  37. Avoid PC World. Placed an order when the game became available and stock was in, got order confirmation email, then 3 hours later the cancellation email as many others have. They have however taken the cash out of my account, where most don’t do until despatch.
    Suggest you avoid Curry’s and Dixons as well as they are part of the same group.
    As for Amazon and the inflated prices, please don’t feel tempted to “feed” these greedy sellers

  39. Bit the bullet. I would encourage anybody to go for the GAME offer with an extra Brain Game for just under £50. Just reluctantly ordered so hopefully will have a happy mum and girlfreind at Christmas. Very dissapointed it has come to this though, an extra £40 that i dont have. But many thanks to the makers of this site for help.


  40. Placed order yesterday morning when they had stock. Got confirmation email, decided to check my account and it is now showing out of stock. Phoned then to query it and was told they had no stock yesterday (15/12/08), I ask when they ee advertised that they did then?? She cames back and apologized and aid th the did have stock and it was sold out in 6 mins, told her I was ware of this but why have you taken my order and let me think that I was one of the lucky one thats had got it. All she could do was apologise. The moral of the story is don’t get your hopes up, these companies are using this as a good excuse to put you on back order so thy hav orders coming in after Xmas!!!

The same has happened to me with an E-bay purchase that was Guaranteed for xmas delivery!! Turns out that they didnt have them in hand!   42. Hi, placed an order with Game yesterday and chose the offer with Big Brain Academy. I know these companies have to make money but why can’t they just sell the game on it’s own if they’ve got it in stock instead of using these tactics knowing people are desparate for this game for their kids for Christmas and getting them to spend more money. Some people would say I should be pleased I’m getting the game at all but only gone to Game after having my order cancelled by Currys 3 times, PC World twice and still awaiting stock on Play! Well done all of you out there sensible enough to wait till after Christmas!

  47. Just an update: Ordered the 2 game bundle from Game last night and was dispatched today so all being well it should tun up ok. Think that unfortunatley this is going to have to be a route most people will have to take, price wise and value it seems the best overall. As of time i type this it is still in stock and has been for most of the day, i would guess that this may be the last bid delivery they get. Anyway, again, many thanks to this site for providing the updates, really did help. Merry Christmas.

My outstanding orders with Dixons and Curry’s have finally been processed and I managed to get one from amazon (at RRP)! I’ve just cancelled the Dixons one. I have decided to hedge my bets with Curry’s just in case in doesn’t arrive before xmas (something amazon guarantees). So the worse case scenario is I’ll have 2 on xmas day.
    I think there has been a major delivery yesterday/today because a lot of sites are finally showing stock. That’ll show those ebay thieves

  53. i happened to notice yesterday that amazon had stock at 29.99 and ordered quickly (along with a couple of other items) The other items say dispatched but the game says dispatching shortly…. i hope it comes through..
    i had tried to place order through Currys the day before when it said it was in stock – i completed all credit card details and processed order then the screen said “sorry – out of stock) I dont know if they have actually taken any money off my card.. i have to assume that it went out of stock as i was using their very slow website… i will be cross if they have as their terms and conditions say they will debit card as they are dispatching the item… will wait and see.

    Had started to give up hope after a long chat with a chap from Play.com last night who basically said that the demand was so great that unless you had your preorder in very early in Dec there was no hope!!!

    So thank you all – it will be a Merry Christmas after all!!

Having ordered this game several times via Zavvi, Play, Littlewoods and Dixons who all said they had it in stock only to have the order cancelled the next day I finally managed to get hold of it yesterday in Argos. They have subsequently now sold out. Since getting it I can’t put it down so definately worth the long wait!!

  60. Hi, Well I have given up now….Placed an order with PC World which was cancelled after 36 hours. Placed an order with Play which is still “awaiting stock” – having jittered around the “order taken” – “awaiting despatch” and back to the “Awaiting Stock” status…. Have cancelled now and will get something else…. Congratulations to all those who managed to get a copy – and good luck to those programmers who spot the obvious “gap in the market” to provide “real-time” ordering system !!!

Managed to get a copy from Argos in Catford today!(Although I see they are all sold out now) Check their reserve an item for local pick up and check stock in all local stores according to your postcode. You can check the stock in about 10 of the most local stores to you. Good Luck! (At least I’m one less customer on the Play.com waiting list now)

  63. Thanks for a briliant site – I have been recommending it to everyone! After 2 ‘orders’ and 2 cancellations from PC World, it was third time lucky – ordered the game on 17th Dec and it arrived via DHL on the 19th. Paid 24.45, with free delivery. Good luck everyone else!!
